2018 DIXIE SOFTBALL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUCEMENT

Ten Recipients Selected for 2018

We received many great scholarship applications in 2018 which made the selection process quite difficult.  We appreciate everyone who applied and wish the best to you as you continue your academic studies.

Listed below are the 10 official winners of the 2018 Dixie Softball Scholarships

The official winner and recipient of the Frank L. Baxter Honorary Scholarship is BOBBIE ANNE UMBERGER.  She played in the Cumberland County Dixie Softball League.  Bobbie is a dual enrollment (high school and college) senior at Cumberland High School with a weighted GPA of 4.4762 on a 5-point scale and is ranked 2nd in her class of 94 seniors.  She is a Virginia Girls State nominee, a member of the Principal’s Honor Roll, served as Vice-President of the Health Occupations Students of America and served as President of HOSA.  Upon graduation from high school, Bobbie will earn her Certified Nursing Assistant license and will have an Associate’s Degree in General Studies from college.  She currently works as a hostess/cashier at a local area restaurant.  Bobbie plans to attend Longwood University to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and become a registered nurse (RN).

The official winner and recipient of the Billy Adkins Memorial Scholarship is ABIGAIL “ABBY” JADE BAGGETT.  She participated in the Dunn Dixie Softball League.  Abby is a senior at Midway High School and currently ranks 2nd in her class of 169 high school senior students maintaining a weighted GPA of 4.89 on a 5-point scale.  She is a member of and has served as president of the BETA Club and is also a member of the Future Business Leaders of America as well as playing varsity softball for her high school team.  Abby plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to pursue her degree in chemistry and continue on to medical school.  She has been working part-time since age 16 to help with the family expenses as well as helping to coach younger girls in the local league.

The official winner and recipient of the R. T. Adams Memorial Scholarship is VANESSA MAE BOWLUS.  She played for the Waynesboro Dixie Softball league.  Vanessa is a senior at Wayne County High School maintaining a cumulative 3.78 grade point average on a 4.0 scale which ranks 19th in her class of 77.  She has had to work after school and during the summer to help with family expenses.  Vanessa plans to attend college and work hard to obtain a degree in computer science.

The official winner and recipient of the Tim Neely Memorial Scholarship is ABRIELLE “ABRI” FAITH HENRY.  She participated in the McEwen Dixie League.  Abri is a senior at McEwen High School and has maintained a 3.82 grade point average on a 4-point scale ranking her 14th in her class of 61 students.  She has worked at the local Dairy Queen for the last 18 months and currently works as a shift manager as well as coaching and umpiring in her local league.  Abri is a member of BETA Club, Spanish Club, Pep Club, STEM and Future Business Leaders of America as well as playing high school softball, basketball and volleyball.  She plans to attend Nashville State Community College and/or the University of Tennessee Martin to obtain her Education degree and become a teacher.

The official winner and recipient of the Aubrey Tapley Memorial Scholarship is BROOKLYN DANIELLE GRIMES.  She participated in the Collinwood Dixie Softball League.  Brooklyn is a senior at Collinwood High School maintaining a 97.4918 grade point average on 100-point scale which ranks 6th in her senior class of 71.  She is active in school serving as teacher/office aid and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, BETA Club and Spanish Club as well as participating as an All-American winning varsity cheerleader.  Brooklyn works part-time at a local convenience store.  She plans to attend Tennessee Technological University to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in order to become a Certified Public Accountant.

The official winner and recipient of the George D. Matthews Sr. Memorial Scholarship is CAROL ANN FEARS.  She played in the Halifax County/South Boston Dixie Softball League.  Carol is a senior at Halifax County High School and maintains a 3.63 GPA on a 4-point scale which ranks 45th in her class of 366 seniors.  Carol has been involved in numerous extracurricular activities.  She has also worked part-time during high school at a local grocery store as well as working on the family farm.  Carol plans to attend Virginia Tech University to pursue a degree in Agribusiness.

The official winner and recipient of the Helen Louise Jordan Memorial Scholarship is ASHLEY JANEAN GIDNEY.  She played with the Perry Junior League Dixie Softball League.  Ashley is a senior at Perry High School with a 3.94 cumulative GPA on a 4-point scale ranking her 30th in her class of 279 seniors.  She is a member of Future Farmers of America, BETA Club and National Honor Society as well as playing varsity softball as a starting pitcher.  Ashley has participated in a wide variety of charity work such as food drives and fund raising.  She plans to attend college in Georgia and eventually become a labor and delivery nurse.

The official winner and recipient of the Charles W. “Buddy” Wade Memorial Scholarship is MAKAYLEA “KK” PATRICIA DAUGHERTY.  She played in the Broaddus Youth Baseball/Softball League.  KK is a senior at Broaddus High School who ranks 1st in her class of 24 students with a weighted 4.0 grade point average on a 4-point scale.  She is a 4-year starter on her varsity softball team as well as her varsity basketball team.  KK is a member of National Honor Society and Future Farmers of America as well as being an Emergency Medical Responder and Junior Firefighter for the Broaddus Volunteer Fire Department.  She is actively involved with her church and community in a variety of ways.  KK plans to attend Texas A&M University and eventually become a medical doctor.

The official winner and recipient of the new Ann Bradford Memorial Scholarship is JESSICA LANE ADAMS.  She participated in the West Lincoln Optimist Club Dixie Softball League.  Jessica is a senior at West Lincoln High School and has maintained a cumulative 5.060 grade point average on a 5-point scale ranking her 5th in her class of 216 students.  She has been actively involved in her church and community service projects as well as working part-time.  Jessica is a member of BETA Club, National Honor Society, Science Club, Interact Club and DECA as well as playing high school varsity softball, basketball, tennis and swimming where she has received numerous athletic honor awards.  She plans to attend college to obtain her Bachelor’s degree and continue on to grad school to become a physician assistant (PA).

The official winner and recipient of the new Carlton McWhorter Memorial Scholarship is FAITH ALYSSA HINTON.  She played for the Perry County and Beaumont Dixie Softball leagues.  Faith is a senior at Perry Central High School maintaining a cumulative 4.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale which ranks her near the top in her class of 75 seniors.  Although she is very active in varsity sports and cheerleading as well as clubs and extracurricular activities, Faith has worked at various jobs during the summer to earn extra money for expenses.  Faith will be the first in her family including her parents to attend college and she plans to work hard to obtain her Bachelor’s of Science degree in nursing.
